This time, Apple’s integrating generative AI into Siri in a way that changes how we interact with our devices. How the New Siri Works

The updated Siri uses on-device generative AI models to process requests. That means your data stays on your iPhone or iPad instead of being sent to the cloud. Apple’s always emphasized privacy, and this keeps that promise. But it’s not just about privacy—it’s about speed. On-device processing means near-instant responses. No more waiting for the internet to catch up.

Google Assistant is on billions of devices too, but they’re fragmented across manufacturers and OS versions. Apple controls the hardware, software, and update cycle. Microsoft has been experimenting with AI assistants in Windows and Teams, but they’re focused on enterprise. Samsung’s Bixby never gained real traction. Apple’s move puts pressure on everyone else to match both the functionality and the privacy standards. It also strengthens the lock-in effect of the Apple ecosystem. Once Siri can do things other assistants can’t—without sending your data to the cloud—switching becomes harder.

What Happens Next

The rollout starts with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Devices with A12 chips or later will support the full feature set. Older models will get limited AI features, mostly cloud-dependent. Apple will push updates aggressively—especially since this is the kind of feature that sells new hardware.

Developers will need time to adapt. The new App Intents framework is powerful, but it requires rethinking how apps expose functionality. Early adopters will have a first-mover advantage. Apps that work smoothly with Siri will feel more native, more useful. Users will notice.

There are still questions. How well will Siri handle edge cases? What happens when it misinterprets a request and books the wrong flight or sends a message to the wrong person? Apple’s betting that on-device processing reduces errors by understanding personal context better than cloud models. But mistakes will happen. The company will need clear recovery paths—like undoing actions or reviewing recent commands.

Another open question: how will Apple handle third-party AI integrations? Right now, Siri uses Apple’s own models. But could developers plug in their own AI for specific tasks? That’s not supported yet. Opening that door could boost innovation but might weaken privacy guarantees. Apple will have to decide where to draw the line.

One thing’s certain: this isn’t the end of the road. The new Siri is a platform. It’ll get smarter as Apple collects anonymized usage patterns and improves the models.
